Torrox is set to have the first day care centre in the Axarquia for the elderly and dependent, the only similar facility being the Taller de Amsitad in Nerja which cares for people with learning disabilities.
The building is next to the public nursery near the lighthouse. This community centre was built following an agreement between the previous Socialist government of Torrox and the Junta de Andalucia. However, the original project did not include a number of items subsequently considered essential – electricity, sanitation, water and equipment – so these had to be factored in and have cost around €400,000.
The next stage is to approve the start of the tender process as the centre will be run by a specialist, private company.
All being well, the centre, which has 30 places, could be open during the first few months of 2011.
