Police in Lubumbashi, DR Congo, fired over the heads of football fans to disperse angry crowds after the local team TP Mazembe lost the Club World Cup final, played in Abu Dhabi, to the Italian Club Inter Milan by three goals to nil, the disappointed fans taking to the streets to attack Chinese-run businesses.
The explanation for this weird behaviour seems to be that the local fans thought the Japanese referee was Chinese, and they were annoyed by some of his decisions.
