End of radar test period in Torrox tunnel

As from today, fines will be issued to drivers exceeding the speed limit in the tunnels on the AP-6 in Guadarrama (Madrid) and the AP-7 in Torrox (Málaga). Until now, only warning letters have been sent out to offenders.

The cameras in the tunnels photograph every vehicle entering and exiting the tunnels, noting the exact time of entry and exit. A computer then calculates the average speed of the vehicles and, if it exceeds 100 kph, a fine is issued and offenders will also lose license points.

The fines are up to €600, depending upon how much over the 100 kph the vehicle was travelling, and six points will be deducted from the driving license of the offender.

According to the DGT, changing lanes inside the tunnel is not an option to avoid detection because the lane cameras are interconnected.

Until now, the system has been in a testing phase with offenders merely being sent a letter detailing the offence and the fine/points loss involved. Now, though, any such letter will be for real.
