Coviran to leave Vélez-Málaga at the end of this week

The giant Andalucian distribution company Coviran is preparing to say farewell to Vélez-Málaga after more than twenty years in the municipality as it moves to a new, and larger facility in Casabemerja.

The move is expected to be completed by Monday May 16th and Coviran has already informed companies that it will no longer be serving order out of Vélez-Málaga as from May 17th.

The move is a great blow to the municipality of Vélez-Málaga, although it does appear that the situation could have been avoided.

Five year ago, Coviran bought a plot of land on the industrial estate on the Camino de Torrox with the idea of building a new distribution centre, a project which would have required an investment of around €6 million.

However, administrative problems relating to planning regulations, land classification and the urbanisation of the area meant that that the company could not implement their plans, despite investing €500,000 in the project.

Instead, Coviran decided to move their base of operations to Casabemerja in the neighbouring Antequera region. The new centre occupies 8,000 square metres, double the current site.
