An absolute first…

While in the UK the other week I popped in to Aldi, as one does, and they had some very good quality, hard wearing and, above all, cheap shorts on offer at £5.99. So I bought a pair.

And very nice shorts they are too. Good pockets, decent size, a sufficient number but not OTT as sometimes happens these days…Being ostensibly ‘working’ shorts, they have a sort of ‘handle’ on the right suitable, I presume for hanging a hammer or other tools.

Personal note: Must get a hammer. Anyway, I didn’t try them on, just made a wild guess at the size required – never know what size to pick, not a clue. The sizing varies, anyway, from manufacturer to manufacturer etc etc.

Lo and behold…a perfect fit. As I was putting them on, something seemed a bit odd, unusual even. Couldn’t immediately put my finger on it, as it were, but then suddenly the realisation was upon me.

I couldn’t believe it, so I checked, and checked again, comparing these to other shorts and trousers. It was true…

Left-handed shorts! Never, ever come across this phenomenon before. Could be a manufacturing ‘glitch’ I suppose, but doubt it. Just never seen it before.

The top fastening button is on the left, buttonhole on the right. Takes a bit of getting used to when you have spent your whole life with buttons on the left.

But there’s more. The zipper flap goes right to left, which means that the zip is operated with the left hand rather than the right. Now that really does take some getting used to.

As I said, I have never encountered, seen or even heard of left handed shorts before. Personal note: Must get out more.

I think you’ll find that there is a perfectly logical explanation for that. They are what those in the trade would call………. “Ladies shorts!”
