Mijas donkey taxis to be regulated

The Mijas donkey taxis have been a great tourist attraction since they began back in the sixties but it is only now that the Council is getting round to regulating the profession through municipal ordinances.

The document proposes regulating the attire of the taxi ‘drivers’. Not a uniform as such but a ban on shorts, sandals, hats and colourful sunglasses.

Another item on the agenda is training by the Tourist Department as those walking with the taxis can act as tourist guides. The Council is proposing regular meetings to keep the taxi operators appraised of local events and cultural items so they can then pass these on to their customers.

The Council wants to see the donkey taxis operating every day of the year with schedules being set up and also plans to have an official taxi stop near El Compás.

For the benefit of the animals themselves, the Council wants to move the donkeys from the existing quarters to a new stable area.
