January decree to legalise illegally built homes

Barely three months before scheduled regional parliamentary elections, the president of the Junta de Andalucia, José Antonio Griñán, has announced that on Tuesday January  10th the government is expected to approve the decree that will regularise most of the illegal houses built in recent decades in the undeveloped land in the community.

There are thought to be an estimated 50,000 such illegal dwellings in Málaga and over 300,000 in Andalucia as a whole.

The illegal construction of homes on rural land has resulted in numerous mayors and other politicians being convicted in the courts and, in many cases, sent to prison.

In the Axarquia, 12,760 buildings have been identified as being illegal, of which 11,025 could be legalised as a result of the decree.
