Junta de Andalucia to consider change to minimum size requirement for clam fishing

The Junta de Andalucia has pledged to establish a 200 kilos weight limit for the clam fishermen in the Gulf of Cádiz and to consider, legally and technically, a request to lower the minimum size requirement from 25mm to 24mm.

The minimum size requirement of 24 mm has been in place since 2002 and all subsequent studies have recommended maintaining this same limit. Hoiwever, the Junta de Andalucia has pledged to obtain legal and technical advice on the matter.

The Junta de Andalucia has given the fishermen the option to temporarily fish for other species but the fishermen say that this would cause unfair competition and lead to conflict due to the larger size of their vessels and nets.

The fishing industry in the area is not in a very good state.
