Four Blue Flags for Nerja

Blue flags have once more been awarded to Burriana, Torrecilla, El Playazo and Maro beaches, the third consecutive year that all four beaches have received the award.

  1. Mike says:

Strange how I saw several owners with their dogs on Burriana Beach last week

  2. Roger says:

Well I do wonder what the beaches, and more importantly, the sea, are like where they didn’t achieve the blue flag award!?

  3. Nerjafan says:

Tried the email address given above, it didn’t work. I love Nerja and was there only a couple of weeks ago, but there was sewage in the sea and the loos at Burriana were out of order for several days. Nerja Council need to get their act together and clean up the beaches and the footpaths.

They do seem to go on holiday just after they issue the flags. Maybe to get away from the complaints. There’s another email I was give too so maybe this person is worth copying in on further emails:
FEE related emails to Finn Bolding Thomsen ([email protected])

This is BlueFlag’s response from last year:

“Thank you for your interest in the Blue Flag and for assisting us in monitoring the state of the awarded beaches and marinas. It is difficult to continually have an overview of all 3600 awarded sites world wide and we therefore much appreciate efforts such as your own in telling us if there is a site that is not in full compliance or where there are other problems.
I will ask our national operator in Spain to follow up on your complaint and get back to you as soon as possible.”

Needless to say no follow up occurred despite further emails.

The following response received from Blue flag:
Thank you for your email and your interest in the Blue Flag programme.

As you may find in the interpretation guide of the criteria for Blue Flag, criteria 9 states that the collection, treatment and discharge of urban wastewater in the community must meet national/ international standards and comply with national/international legislation. For the countries in EU, there are requirements for the treatment and effluent quality given in the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (91/271/EEC). A number of new EU countries have been granted dispensation from the EU Directive. This is the case of Spain where national legislation is applied.
The Spanish Ministry of Environment informs that the sewage treatment plant in Nerja will be finished by 2015. The municipality is aware of the need of such service within the area.

What is compulsory for every European country with Blue Flag is to have an excellent water quality, according to the European Water Quality Directive.(criteria 8)
Blue Flag beaches in Nerja have an excellent water quality. You may check it here: http://www.juntadeandalucia.es/salud/sites/csalud/galerias/documentos/c_3_c_2_medio_ambiente_y_salud/zona_banos_litorales/playas_2012/malaga.pdf

We strongly advise you to forward your complaint to the Regional Health Authorities in Malaga, belonging to the Regional Government, Junta de Andalucia.
