A 26 year old man was arrested on Sunday afternoon in Ronda, Málaga province, after allegedly attacking his girlfriend with an axe, leaving her seriously injured.
The attack took place at noon in calle Azahara in the La Dehesa district of Ronda, one of the most run down areas of the town. The man apparently began arguing with his girlfriend and then hit her repeatedly with an axe he just happened to have with him.
The man then barricaded himself in a house and it was some time before the police could arrest him. The alleged attacker is apparently an habitual drug user.
The girl suffered severe injuries, including head trauma, and after initial treatment at the Health Centre in Ronda was transferred by helicopter to the Carlos Haya hospital in Málaga city.
Police are treating the incident as a possible case of domestic violence.
