Fernando Alonso still has a healthy 37 point lead over Lewis Hamilton after climbing from tenth position to finish third in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.
Alonso was in second place with seven laps to go but was overtaken by Sergio Perez who had adopted a different tyre strategy. The race was won, very easily, by Lewis Hamilton who started on pole position and apart from a short period at pit stop time, led from start to finish.
Reigning champion Sebastian Vettel failed to finish, as did Jenson Button. Vettel is still in the hunt for a third title but Button’s retirement has all but ended any realistic chance of a second title.
