Request to archive the proceedings relating to the theft of cocaine from the National Institute of Toxicology in Sevilla

The Public Prosecutor in Sevilla has asked that the proceedings relating to the theft of 30 kilos of cocaine from a secure room at the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences in Sevilla be archived through lack of evidence.

Several months of investigation has failed to provide evidence as to the likely perpetrators of the theft. The Prosecutor has requested a provisional dismissal of proceeding so that, should evidence from any police enquiry deliver results, the case can be reopened.

The theft of the drugs from the ‘secure’ facility at the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences, where they were to be tested for composition and purity, was noticed on  March 22nd, although the theft could have taken place in the preceding days.

The room where the drugs were stored was known as ‘the bunker’, but the key to this secure facility was apparently left in a drawer to which almost anyone had access.

Maintenance workers were regularly in and out of the premises during the period in which the drugs were stolen and fell under suspicion. Security camera footage showed the workers coming and going from the premises carrying bags, but in declarations made before a judge they asserted that the bags only contained their work tools.
