Google Reader to be retired

Times change, particularly when it comes to technology, and Google has decided to call time on its Google Reader, a much used RSS reader, as from July 1st 2013. Existing users, of which there are still many, will be able to easily transfer their data to other programs.

Google Reader was introduced in 2005 and was very popular for keeping up with all the latest news etc via RSS feeds. However, other forms of collecting news or social sharing, such as Twitter, have gradually been taking over.

Google is also ending support for the Google Voice app for BlackBerry phones, instead pointing users toward the HTML5 webapp.

Google will also no longer sell or update the desktop versions of its Snapseed photo editing app.

For diehard RSS users, there are a number of free alternatives for aggregators, such as Feedly, Friendfeed, Netvibes and RSS Owl.
