Youth unemployment

The number of people under the age of 25 years who have left the labour market since the beginning of the financial crisis in Spain in 2007 has been put at 864,100. The figures are in a report by the employment management company Asempleo.

At the end of 2012, there were 930,200 people under 25 years who were willing and able to work but were unemployed. Some 45.9% spent more than a year in unemployment, thus falling into the category of long-term unemployed.

Youth unemployment has doubled since the start of the crisis. Youth unemployment in the canary Islands stands at 70%. In Andalucia it is 65.1% and in Extremadura it is 61.1%.

At the lower end, although hardly really ‘low’, are La Rioja with 36.3% unemployed, Cantabria 41.6%, Aragon 45.9% and the Basque Country with 46%.
