Driver detained in connection with death of cyclist has no licence

Police in Madrid have traced and arrested the driver suspected of causing the death of a cyclist on Wednesday. The driver had already lost his licence, been convicted of driving under the influence and careless driving and was banned from driving until 2017.

The accident occurred at 06:30 on Wednesday morning in calle Camino Chorrillo, near to calle Villamil, in the Tetuán district of Madrid. Cyclist Oscar F.P, aged 38 years, died in the collision.

The driver of the offending vehicle fled the scene. A painstaking investigation of the scene led police to the owner of the vehicle involved and to the man’s nephew who had been driving the vehicle at the time, 26-year old Mauricio E.A.G.

Mauricio E.A.G. lacked a licence due to having used up all his points, had already been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol in 2012 and was banned from driving until 2017, although he had already violated this ban in February 2013.

On this occasion the detainee could have committed the crimes of failing to render aid and reckless homicide.
