On the day that the former Mayor of Los Palacios, Antonio Maestre (PSOE), was accused of corruption, misappropriation of funds, influence peddling and other crimes, a fire broke out in the municipal archives, destroying important documents relating to accounts, invoices and official agreements of the previous administration.
Historical documents stored in the files were also under threat from the blaze but the very important Libro del Becerro, described as the historic jewel of the city, was saved.
Police suspect the fire was caused intentionally.
