Another incident at the border with Gibraltar

A Guardia Civil Customs officer was apparently injured on Sunday when he tried to stop a motorcycle at the Gibraltar border.

The motorcyclist allegedly ignored a request to stop at the border control and dragged the officer along before they both fell to the ground. The motorcyclist, who was carrying 149 packets of cigarettes, was arrested.

The officer injured his leg in the incident and is now off work. This is the third case of this type reported at the Gibraltar border during the past few days.

A dispute over fishing around Gibraltar was coincidentally followed by increased border controls by the Spanish authorities in an effort to combat the smuggling of tobacco. This led to long queues at the border during the busy summer period.

The Gibraltar authorities began documenting and, in some cases, filming the delays being caused to travellers entering and leaving the Rock. With EU observers due to visit the area shortly, the reporting of a number of smuggling incidents could not have come at a better time.
