Domestic violence statistics for 2012

According to figures released Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the Central Registry of the Ministry of Interior listed 36,641 victims of gender or domestic violence in 2012, down by 9.2% on the previous year.

Of the victims, 33,738 were women and 2,903 men. There were a total of 29,146 women with interim protection measures against their partners or former partners for abuse, down by 9.6% on 2011.

Of the 29,146 female victims, 19,097 were foreigners and 10,049 were Spanish.

These figures give an overall rate of 142.3 women victims of domestic violence per 100,000 people over the age of 14 years in Spain. Among foreign nationals this rises to 354.9 per 100,000. Among African nationals the rate is 470.7 per 100,000 and amongst Spanish nationals it is 108.6 per 100,000 adults.
