The Mountain Bike Race scheduled for last Sunday, a 63 kilometre event forming part of the Málaga Provincial Circuit, although not counting in the overall classification, was indeed cancelled at the last moment by the Councillor for Sports, José Alberto Tomé.
The decision to cancel the event was apparently taken after consultation with the Local Police, who were concerned about safety in relation to the works being carried out on a 200 metre stretch of El Playazo beach. The beach was the scheduled start and finish of the race.
The event was publicised on the municipal website but, unfortunately, the cancellation was not. Instead, the item just vanished without trace, leaving everyone in the dark.
The Councillor responsible for Sports, José Alberto Tomé, has stated that given the same circumstances again, his decision would not change. However, in the wake of this fiasco, the Councillor made his post available to the mayor, José Alberto Armijo, with the result that Antonio García is now the new Councillor for Sports.
