Former Lipasam director under investigation for alleged fraud

Ever wonder what happens to abandoned vehicles? The former head of the municipal cleaning company Limasa in Sevilla, Rafael Pineda, is in court to face charges of bribery and forgery relating to the illegal sale of one thousand abandoned cars during the period 2007-2008.

An audit by KMPG revealed the same vehicles listed in the Office of Abandoned Vehicles and on a list of vehicles shipped to Cuba under a 2010 agreement. This allegedly permitted the sale of the cars without the revenue being listed in the Lipasam accounts. The amount of the fraud is estimated at 500,000 euros.

The vehicles were allegedly handed over to scrap yards outside the formal procedures.

The research also led to questions about another agreement relating to recycled oil and a Local Police officer, the head of the Office of Abandoned Vehicles, the owner of a scrap yard and the former head of External Relations for Lipasam are now under investigation.
