The Mayor of Burgos, Javier Lacalle, has announced the permanent cessation of works to convert calle Vitoria into a boulevard, the decision following five nights of protests and 46 arrests.
At a press conference to announce his decision, the Mayor said that the Boulevard “was the excuse, not the problem” and that “the works have been exploited by some for other purposes.”
There had been suggestions of a temporary cessation of the work and negotiations with various community groups, but this was eventually shelved and the works have been permanently halted. The mayor has resisted numerous calls to resign throughout the local crisis.
