Record number of international tourists during 2013

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has announced that the number of tourists visiting Spain in 2013 was an all-time record of 60.6 million and moved the country back into third place in most popular holiday destinations behind France and the USA.

The previous record was 58.7 million in 2007 and 2013 was the first time that a figure in excess of 60 million has been achieved. France attracts 83 million tourists and the USA attracts 67 million per year.

Canarias, Baleares, Comunidad Valenciana, Cataluña and País Vasco all apparently registered record highs relating to international tourist numbers.

In terms of regions, Andalucia was in fourth place in the table of international visitor numbers behind Cataluña, the Baleares and Canarias. The only region to suffer a decrease during 2013 was the Community of Madrid.
