Politician shot dead in León

Isabel Carrasco, aged 59 years, head of the provincial government in León and a member of the governing People’s Party (PP), was shot dead on Monday afternoon as she crossed a footbridge over the rio Bernesga in León.

Isabel Carrasco was attacked on her way to a party meeting near her home at around 17:20. Two people have been detained in connection with the shooting, the wife and daughter of a local police chief. It is also reported that the daughter was recently fired from a job with the provincial council and the incident is believed to be an act of revenge rather than being politically motivated.

Police are currently searching the rio Bernesga for the murder weapon.
