Muscatel grape harvest brought forward due to the weather

The heat and lack of rain during the past months has necessitated the bringing forward of the Muscatel grape harvest by around two weeks.

The harvest is expected to be in the region of 1,500,000 kilos of grapes, producing 400,000 of raisins and 150,000 litres of Muscatel wine.

The grapes are harvested by hand with mules carrying the boxes of grapes, a tradition which has remained unchanged for centuries. Much of the land is so steep that modernisation or mechanisation of collection methods has not been possible.
