Swimmer rescued after he developed hypothermia and couldn’t get back to shore

A 27-year-old swimmer had to be rescued on Thursday evening in Torre del Mar after he developed hypothermia and got into difficulties and was unable to return to the shore.

The incident took place at 18:15 when a friend of the bather notified the authorities that the man had been in the water for over an hour and seemed unable to return to the shore.

Medics, the Guardia Civil, Local Police and Maritime Rescue were notified and the man was eventually located and rescued by the rescue boat ‘El Puntal’. The swimmer, suffering from hypothermia but otherwise in good health, was taken to the port of Caleta de Vélez-Málaga before being transferred to the district hospital.
