Two arrested in sham wedding case

Two senior officials of an association for the disabled in Málaga have been arrested for allegedly trying to harass and coerce a worker into a marriage of convenience with an illegal immigrant.

The woman complained to the Guardia Civil that for one month she had between pressured by the two managers who wanted her to enter into a marriage of convenience with an illegal immigrant of Ethiopian nationality.

The woman said she was also offered €3,500 and was told that the managers had access to the necessary files to ensure that no-one at the Civil Registry became suspicious. A marriage date of December 5th had already been booked.

The victim, disabled and with a child, was in a precarious financial position and was reportedly constantly visited by the two managers as they tried to coerce her into agreeing to the wedding. They also said she could file for divorce after a suitable period.

The Guardia Civil carried out an investigation and confirmed the veracity of the statements made by the woman and then proceeded to arrest the two individuals on charges of harassment and coercion.
