House sales down in August

House sales continue to fall, down by 15.4% in August to 23,552 units when compared to the same month last year. The figures were published today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

The sale of homes fell by 2.5% in July when compared to the same month last year – 2011 closed 17.7% down on 2010 – making it 17 consecutive months of decline. A total of 27,388 transactions occurred in July – during the boom years this figure was 80,000 per month.

House sales for June, both new and used, were 25,405 units, a decline of 11.4% on the same month last year and the sixteenth consecutive month in decline.

House sales continue their downward slide, falling by 31.8% in February compared to the same month in 2011 with 30,745 transactions. Compared to January 2012, the decrease was 7.1%.

According to the National Statistics Institue (INE), the number of mortgages signed in December fell by 12.5% compared to the previous month, making it twenty consecutive months of decline.

Sales of existing homes fell by 28% in September compared to the same month in 2010 with 25,881 transactions.

The sale of homes fell again in June for the fourth consecutive month with 28,612 transactions registered, a decrease of 22.9% compared to same month in 2010 and 7.6% down on the May figures.

The sales of houses during 2009 fell by 24.9% compared to 2008, the total number of transactions being 414,811.
