The statisticians have been busy and we now know that almost 4,000 people have visited the Nerja Caves Information Office in calle Carmen since it opened in March 2013 and that 45% of these were foreign nationals.

The Nerja Caves Foundation, revitalised since the change in management, is determined to reverse the downward trend in visitor numbers to the Caves and has been investing heavily in cruise tourism, one of the few sectors in Málaga province currently experiencing a boom period. It is hoped that this investment will bear fruit during 2013.

In the past decade, visitor numbers to the Nerja Caves has fallen from 527,096 in 2001 to 380,000 in 2010, a decline of 28%. Each year sees less and less people visiting this fabulous site.

Visitors to the Nerja Caves

A total of 410,000 people visited the Nerja Caves during 2008, around 6% less than during 2007. This year is the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the caves.
