DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN NERJA

Domestic violence seems to be all too common these days and ten people have so far lost their lives so far this year in Spain as a result of such action. Even in a small town like Nerja, there are one hundred ‘protection orders’ currently being maintained.

The Centro de Información a la Mujer in Nerja handled 102 complaints of domestic abuse during the period January to November last year whilst the total number of cases in the municipality was around 200.

The protection orders are designed to ensure the safety of the victim of domestic abuse or violence and include a series of welfare and police measures, one of them being follow-up care.

Roughly one-third of the protection orders relate to foreign women, the biggest offenders being Moroccans followed by the British.
