Record turnout in Almayate

More than 4,000 people took part in the XXI Romería Sagrado Corazón (Festival of the Sacred Heart) in Almayate yesterday.

The day started with a Mass at 08:00 and then the procession wound its way to Torre del Mar. Horse-drawn carriages led the procession, followed by the traditional carts pulled by teams of oxen. They were followed by about 100 horsemen dressed in traditional garb and, bringing up the rear, the thousands of pilgrims, many of whom were dressed to the gills despite the high temperatures.

The procession paused at the iglesia de San Andrés in Torre del Mar at around 13:00 to offer a floral tribute to the Virgen del Carmen before heading for Taramillas farm and the start of an afternoon of celebrations.
