Nerja market saga

Following the open conflict between the Nerja Council and the Association of Market Traders (AVAM), the Ombudsman for Andalucía requested several reports relating to the proposed new site and the first one is now in.

The Ombudsman, who offered to mediate in the conflict, requested that several reports be made available relating to the new site in Almijara, or ‘the end of the world’ as it is referred to by the local market traders. These included a report by the Provincial Fire Consortium relating to security at the new site and a report by the Cuenca Mediterránea Andaluza (CMA) as to whether the site is adequate for its intended use.

The report from the Provincial Fire Consortium is now in. It states that the current El Chaparil is unsuitable and poses dangers to residents in the case of an emergency. The new site, on the other hand, meets all the necessary conditions and requirements for adequate security. The AVAM are rather surprised by the conclusions of the report but have agreed to abide by the findings.

As far as the awaited CMA report is concerned, the Council does not expect any problems as they were given authorisation to build the new site.

And the net result so far? The market will move ‘very soon’. However, we’ve been hearing that for rather a long time. Also, even after all the reports are in, the market traders still plan to meet to discuss their final position on the subject of the move.
