Big bust

National Police officers have seized 316 kilos of top grade heroin in the biggest bust of its kind in Spain.

Operation Teide began in February and culminated yesterday in the arrest of five people, four Turkish and one Rumanian, and the seizure of 316.5 kilos of high grade heroin. The blackmarket value of the drugs is in the region of €54 million.

The drugs arrived in Sitges (Barcelona) on board a yacht and it is the first time that heroin has detected coming into Spain by sea. The heroin was divided into 633 packages of 500 grams each.

Two of those detained were also implicated in another police operation which took place in 1994. On that occasion, 118 kilos of heroin were seized.

In addition to the drugs, the police also impounded a 12.5 metre yacht, a Nissan Vanette, a VW Golf, documentation, navigation equipment and the usual assortment of mobile phones.

What happens to all these mobile phones that are always impounded, would love to know. Are they stored, destroyed, given back or what?
