Market protests to continue

The head of the Association of Market Traders, Juan Rojas, met yesterday with the mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo, in the latest bid to settle the long-running dispute.

The Council has offered to expand the Almijara site and create two parking areas, one for the traders and one for visitors to the market.

The Market Traders Association met later in the day and voted to reject the Almijara site and continue their protests. The traders maintain that the site is far too far from the centre to be a viable proposition. Juan Rojas is keen to continue approaches to the owner of the land in calle Carabeo/Los Huertos, a site considered by the traders to be ideal for the weekly market.
