Population is decreasing

For the first time in decades, the population of Nerja is actually decreasing according to the latest census figures.

At the end of January 2008, the population was 22,164, which is 12 less than the previous month and 146 less than it was three months ago.

On the other hand, the percentage of registered foreigners is on the increase, with 30.2% of the population now being non-Spanish. At the end of January there were 15 more foreigners registered than was the case at the end of 2008.

There are 76 nationalities in Nerja, the largest communities being from:

  1. UK – 2,714
  2. Argentina – 584
  3. Germany – 545
  4. Sweden – 400
  5. Morocco – 236
  6. France – 220
