Mayor of Alcaucín resigns

The Mayor of Alcaucín, José Manuel Martín Alba, who was arrested four days ago as part of an investigation into corruption, has resigned from the Council.

The Mayor was detained along with thirteen others during Operación Arco and is charged with bribery, corruption, money laundering, influence peddling, breach of trust and fraud. He was expelled from the PSOE on the day of his arrest. José Manuel Martín Alba has been in power since 1991.

The Mayor was in court in in Vélez-Málaga on Tuesday making a declaration before being sent to prison without bail. A similar fate befell the architect from the Málaga Council. Several others involved in the case have been released after posting bail.
