In Madrid, firefighters were called to a house in calle Luis Mitjans in the Retiro district at around 16:15 on Tuesday after receiving reports of a large amount of smoke emanating from the building.
After extinguishing the blaze, the firefighters discovered the bodies of two people, a woman aged between 40 and 45 years and a baby no more than a few months old.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the two people died in a violent manner, possibly as a result of a domestic dispute, and a murder investigation is now underway.
