The Mayor of Alfarnatejo, Antonio Benítez (PSOE), had a lucky escape on Thursday morning when his house was set on fire in what appears to have been a deliberate attack.
The main hypothesis is that the house was doused in gasoline and then set alight, a theory supported by the discovery at the scene of two burned out bottles of gasoline.
An explosion in the early hours of the morning woke the Mayor and his family, probably saving their lives.
