A man out walking his dog in downtown Madrid this morning discovered an abandoned newborn baby on the pavement.
The baby boy, weighing about three kilos, was found inside a sports bag in calle duque de Sesto in the Salamanca district of the capital. The baby still had the umbilical cord attached.
Inside the bag were clothes suitable for a newborn baby. Samur-Protección Civil officers clamped the umbilical cord and transferred the boy to hospital.
Apart from mild hypothermia, the baby was in good health. The welfare of the baby will be assumed by the Social Services department while the police conduct an investigation to try and locate those responsible for abandoning the child.
