The year ended with 3,923,603 people unemployed, the December figures being an increase of 1.4% (54,657) on the previous month.
Although the increase in unemployment during 2009 was less than during 2008, it was still the second highest figure since comparable statistics began being recorded in 1996.
Overall, unemployment during 2009 increased by 25.4%.
