Spain slump to defeat

Spain suffered a shock defeat to Switzerland in their opening match of the World Cup, despite dominating play for the vast majority of the match. It was Switzerland’s first opening win since 1954.

Spain were totally dominant but David Villa, Xavi and Iniesta were unable to convert their superiority into goals, wasting a number of chances.

At the beginning of the second half, Switzerland took the lead through Fernandes. Spain brought on Torres, Navas and Pedro but they too failed to make an impression and the Swiss could easily have scored another two goals.

The pressure is on the perennial World Cup underachievers now.
