Sticks and stones

The Carnival in Torrox is proving to be not without controversy as Councillors take exception to a number of slogans or terms being used by various carnival groups.

Earlier in the week, the Mayor of Torrox, Toñi Claros, took exception to the use of the phrases ‘Band of Crooks’ and ‘Band of Scoundrels’ by one carnival group when referring to the municipal government.

Now, the Councillor for Equality, Paqui Bellido, has accused one carnival group of being sexist and inciting violence through the use of such terms as ‘las niñas’ (the girls).

Opposition Councillors have remarked that the ‘Band of Crooks’ references are merely light-hearted humour and should be taken in the context for which they are being used, namely carnival, particularly considering the government has never been shy in insulting or falsely accusing opponents.

The phrase Get a Life springs to mind.
