Residual waters run deep

rio Chillar, Nerja, effluentAn otherwise very pleasant saunter along the rio Chillar walkway today was blighted by a terrible stench coming from the riverbank near the Joaquin Herrera school, an odour that could only be untreated residual waters.

There was a steady flow of ‘water’ trickling down to the riverbank, presumably from a pipe under the walkway. It could be a broken pipe or, as is often reported and denounced, the illegal connection of sewage pipes from homes to the storm water drains.

It is an area where various ‘leaks’ have been denounced on numerous occasions by residents and environmental groups. People who illegally connect sewage pipes to the storm drain system are regularly ‘threatened’ with fines but that doesn’t appear to do much good, if any.

  1. Rob, We have noticed this very spot for many years-since the paths were built-probably there before but not visible.
