49 immigrants intercepted off the Granada coast

On Thursday night, Marine Rescue and the Guardia Civil intercepted a boat carrying 49 people, including 42 children, about seven miles from Castell de Ferro, Granada province.

The boat was first detected by the SIVE surveillance system at around 22:00 about ten miles from Castell de Ferro and vessels were sent to intercept.

The small craft was having problems due to the rough seas and rains and the passengers were taken aboard the Marine Rescue vessel ‘Salvamar Hamal’ and transported to Motril. One of the passengers suffered an injury to his hand and upon arrival in Motril was rushed to hospital to have stitches put in.

The rest of the passengers were said to be in good health and are now in the custody of the National Police.
