The suspension of the tram service and the re-introduction of a bus service with new routes and timetables has done little to stem the decline in passenger numbers using the public transport system in Vélez-Málaga.
The tram system, operated by Travelsa (part of Alsa), ceased to operate on June 4th 2012 and was, effectively, replaced by four new bus services. In June, 50,000 people used the public transport system, less than in May (51,500) and a lot less than in June 2011 (59,906). Up until now, the number of users in June has always been greater than for May.
