In 2006, Torrox Council decided to convert a perfectly adequate outdoor swimming pool in La Granja into an indoor heated facility at an initial cost of €1.2 million. Due to the usual technical and administrative problems associated with most projects, the new facility didn’t open until February 2012.
In the meantime, local residents had to travel to other municipalities if they wanted to swim.
The heavy rains on September 28th caused damage to the pool and sports complex and the swimming pool had to be closed. It had lasted just eight months.
The Mayor of Torrox, Francisco Muñoz, has stated that the matter is now in the hands of technicians as a number of changes have to be made and he is unable to say when the facility will reopen again.
At least it did open, even if for just a short while, unlike the €8 million theatre.
