As from Monday March 4th, anyone paying their motoring fines at the provincial headquarters of the Traffic Department (DGT) can only do so by means of a credit or debit card.
With this new initiative, the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) aims to increase security in the headquarters by not having to handle cash and also eliminating the risks and costs in the transfer of cash.
This only affects payments made in the headquarters of the DGT, people still have other means of settling amounts due, such as via the internet, by bank transfer, telephone (which needs a credit card) or by paying cash at the post office or branches of Santander bank. During 2012, only 5.6% of people paid their fines at the DGT headquarters.
