Construction at the eastern end of Nerja

construction site, NerjaThe plot of land at the eastern end of town between the Hotel Los Arcos and Hotel Nerja Club, opposite Capistrano Village, is now a large construction site.  It is widely believed, although, unusually, not officially confirmed, that it will be a new large Mercadona supermarket.

Normally, even the repotting of a plant merits some sort of official announcement, but not in this case. As far as we are aware, it will be a Mercadona supermarket and completion is anticipated by Christmas 2013.

Work is expected to continue six days a week until then. Currently, the work starts at 08:00 daily, although under Spanish law it will be possible to start at 07:00 during the summer.

There is some large machinery on the site and we have had reports of people at the two hotels being disturbed by the noise and dust and even requesting to be moved to other rooms or alternative accommodation. The travel companies have so far not been making clients aware of the situation.

The photos and video were taken at around midday today, Tuesday June 4th. There didn’t seem to be an excessive amount of activity and the noise at this particular time was not overbearing by any means. It could of course simply be that I caught the works during a break or lull in heavy work.

A new Mercadona would certainly be of benefit to the town – another reason one might have expected an official announcement – as it not only provides municipal income from licence fees but, presumably, jobs for local residents. One assumes it will have its own, sizeable, parking area.
