A Walk on the Dark Side…

sleeping rough, NerjaNerja is a beautiful, picturesque seaside twn, often referred to as the ‘jewel of the Costa del Sol’, but like everywhere, it does have its ‘less good’ side. An early(ish) Sunday morning stroll and a few of these flaws were rather apparent.

All along the rio Chillar walkway, the celebrations had obviously been going on the night before but, despite these taking place right next to litter bins…

The river, and banks, in general, tend to be used as large waste receptacles…

With the arrival of the hot, summer weather, some of the regular Niffy Hotspots (junction of avda Castilla Perez and Antonio Millón, junction of calle Antonio Ferrandis ‘Chanquete’ and calle Jaén, calle Manuel Marin) are almost gut-wrenching at times.

And back down by the river, there a couple of spots where it looks like sewage is still seeping onto the riverbank – fortunately not into the river itself, although the resulting pools are absolutely foul smelling (to say the least) as you go past (quickly).

These are stormwater drains, but as we’ve had no rain recently, let alone storms, and rainwater isn’t that colour or smelly, one can only assume it is sewage. This phenomenon has been with us for years, and has been reported in the press on numerous occasions, and is apparently being down to illegal connections of sewage pipes to the water drainage pipes.

Hopefully, once the water treatment plant becomes a reality, the smells will cease. But that won’t be until 2015 at the very earliest, of course.

Graffiti can be artistic, but it can also be unsightly. Someone has recently – the past few days – been daubing a number of premises down calle Málaga and avenida Castilla Perez, including Stephan’s restaurant, garage doors and Cañamiel supermarket.

But it is all over.

As is this…

But to finish on a cheerier note…
