Málaga Council has granted the distinctive Fiesta de Singularidad Turística to Nerja’s Carnival due to it being a event that provides originality and tradition to the cultural heritage of the province.
The Provincial Council has chosen Nerja because of the number of people participating in the event, the originality of the costumes, as well as the election of the Rey Momo and the Ninfas del Carnaval which makes this winter fiesta more attractive and unique.
The first carnival elections took place back in 1920, although the current format dates from 1984. More than 5.000 people generally participate in the procession with another 7.500 people watching as spectators.
A municipal fiesta is declared Fiesta de Singularidad Turística when they have completed at least three editions, and reflect the towns cultural, folklore, gastronomic or ethnographic traditions.
