Eight year prison sentence upheld

The Supreme Court has upheld a decision by the Audiencia de Almería condemning two men, aged 29 and 33 years, to a total of eight years in prison for trying to set light to a service station in El Ejido.

Merchants of misery get 18 years in jail

A Provincial Court in Almería has sentenced three Moroccans to a total of 18 years in prison for their part in bringing 41 illegal immigrants into Spain in November 2007. The illegal immigrants, who each paid €900 for the journey from Morocco, included thirty minors. They landed at Playa La Fabriquilla in Balerma (El Ejido) in November 2007.

Body recovered from pond in El Ejido

Firemen in El Ejido, Almería, yesterday recovered the body of a 25 year old North African from a local irrigation pond. The cause of death is unknown, although an autopsy has ruled out a violent death.

New municipal ordinances in El Ejido bans street prostitution

El Ejido Council in Almería has introduced new municipal ordinances relating to, amongst other things, prostitution, advertising leaflets and the drying of clothes. Under the new ordinance, it is forbidden to offer, solicit, negotiate or accept sexual services on the streets of the town, offenders risking a fine starting at €300.

Court increases sentence in €5 robbery

The Provincial Court in Almería has upped the sentence for two youths convicted of robbery. The two youths, residents of El Ejido, forced their way into a house in August 2007 and used a knife to threaten the occupants and force them to hand over money. Their haul was €5. Six people, five Chinese nationals and one Spaniard, were detained yesterday as they were unloading 2.8 tons of hashish near Guardias Viejas beach in El Ejido, Almería.

Woman dies during Festival Ola!

A 34 year old woman died early this morning during the Festival Ola! which was being celebrated on Guardias Viejas beach in El Ejido, Almería. The woman apparently suffered a heart attack. Medics carried out cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but were unable to revive her.
